Day 94 - Sunday 7th April 2024
With the two time changes (clocks a half hour back for
moving from Victoria to South Australia, and then another hour back for the end
of daylight savings), I was awake a tad early this morning.
A continental breakfast had been left in my room, so after
this and a few cups of tea I was all packed up and checked out just before 09:00.
First stop at the supermarket to get some water and windscreen washer concentrate,
and then onto the road. My first target for the day was over two hours away at
Tam’s Lookout.
The roads were pretty empty by British standards, and I
progressed at the SA speed limit of 110kph. The fuel reached 100km left, and I
started looking for fuel stations, but out in the sticks the prices were
ludicrous (223 cents per litre where in a more populated area it’s around 190).
At a junction in the town of Keith I found it at just under 200 for a litre, so
had my fill there ….. no real nervousness on the fuel front today!
A half hour after refuelling, I turned off the main road and followed a gravel road for 6km to Tam’s Lookout. Well, I followed it as far as I was able as the road turned 4wd only. There was a parking area where a trail to Tams Lookout started, but the sign said that you needed bush hiking experience and skills, so I decided it was probably best to give that a miss.
Next target was a coastal lookout, which was over two hours
distant. I therefore rejoined the main road and cruised along, joining the M1
freeway before turning off onto the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Google Maps bought me to the lookout, and the view was absolutely fantastic across to the ocean.
Next, I decided that the Crows Nest Lookout would be a good spot, so a quarter hour later and I arrived at the lookout, and again the views across to the ocean were amazing.
By now I was only a short way from my overnight accommodation in Victor Harbour, so I drove into town to check in …. It’s just as well I did as the reception was shutting up shortly so they were about to send me some instructions.
It’s a real old school hotel; wooden creaky floors with the bathroom and toilet across the main corridor, but I do have a sea view.
As soon as I was settled, I phoned the ferry company for tomorrow, and managed to get moved to the 10:00 ferry tomorrow which had come up as ‘unavailable’ when booking. I’ve also managed to move to a slightly earlier ferry for the return journey which helps my arrival time in Adelaide on Tuesday
Out to have a bit of an explore, but that was cut short as the rain arrived. I took shelter in a bar where I watched the fourth quarter of Richmond vs St Kilda and had dinner before returning to my base for the night between the showers..
