Day 71 - Friday 15th March 2024

And so Day 71 arrives. On day 142 I return home, so I'm at the halfway point of my big trip. It barely seems possible.

Awake at the usual time, and it's rained overnight. The forecast was for rain until around 11:00, so I was in no hurry to move, so I did some fine tuning of the video for this week so that just needed to add todays footage before publishing ..... it's going to be a longer than usual video this week!

The rain overnight at ground level has fallen as snow that has dusted the mountain tops, and more rain arrived at 09:00 and it hammered down for a couple of hours.

When it stopped at 11:00 I was straight out of the door. I'd decided that I was going to walk out to Waterfall Creek where I visited in the car yesterday; apparently the views of the lake en route are spectacular.

Well, they would have been if the rain and cloud weren't about so much. Down to the shore front, where I grabbed a coffee, then I made my way along towards that tree. The rain started up again, and I took shelter under a tree until it had eased, then I made my way along to the tree in the lake for comparison purposes. There were far fewer people out here this morning, but the different background made a nice contrast.

I continued on beyond the tree, and around the lakeside for about an hour until I reached the same spot as yesterday. The overcast gave it a totally different feel, and it was totally worth revisiting yesterdays locations .... and a bit of exercise didn't hurt either!

There was supposed to have been a winery with a 'cellar door' where I could sample their product, but I didn't find this on the track I was hiking. I did find a bar/restaurant though that I popped into for a bit of refreshment.

The weather has been slowly improving, and when I returned to the tree on the journey back there was a real scrum of people all trying to get their own pictures. A bit of blue against the grey of the clouds makes a huge difference, so I joined to get a couple of final shots.

I then continued along the lakefront as the views just seemed to keep improving, before I reached the road to get me back to my accommodation at around 15:00. Videos and photos immediately loaded onto the computer, and the video completed for the week.

I then nipped out for dinner, and reviewed the video on my return before kicking off the rendering (the process to turn it into a format that can be loaded onto YouTube) ..... a process that's continuing while I create todays blog. It's a longer video this week as Doubtful Sound and Queenstown were such epic locations ..... I'll include the link in tomorrows update.
