Day 117 - Tuesday 30th April 2024

Today's update is going to be fairly short as I've had a bit of a down day.

At Katherine I'd already visited the places that interested me, so I had a nice slow day. I took the opportunity to do some planning for the rest of the trip, and in doing so spotted a mistake that I'd made here in Katherine on both stays that I've been able to correct.

Awake at 06:00 as usual, and as I swung my legs out of bed cramp hit my left calf. If I'd not already been wide awake, that would have definitely done the trick! Showered and into breakfast at just after 07:00, and then back to the cabin. I'm aware that you've probably not got a mental picture when I talk about the cabin, so here it is; the building in the background to the right is my bathroom and toilet.

I did have a look to see if there was anything to interest me for today, but that drew a blank, so I had a couple of games of Sudoku before starting to look at my plans for what's left of the trip. The first thing that struck me is that where I'm staying is noted in my planning book as 'B&B', but I've been paying for my breakfasts here ..... I guess I've been on auto pilot as the majority of the trip has been room only.

I checked against the documentation and breakfast does seem to be included, which has been confirmed by reception, so I've had a refund of the breakfasts that I bought over the two visits. I would have thought the restaurant would have had me down as breakfast included, but if I've been saying I needed to pay perhaps they didn't check.

Next, I looked at the future days travel, and made sure that I had all of the filling stations noted down with distances from the days starting point. There are a few days where the distance to drive is right on the range limit of the car, but the only feasible filling station is well before the half way point, so I now have them all listed so that I (hopefully) don't find myself running out of fuel.

I then did some preparation for tomorrow; I filled the car with fuel which should get me to Kununurra 514 kilometres away, and then visited the supermarket to top up on water and snakes (because you can never have too many jelly sweets to keep you going!).

Then back to the cabin again; the bar opened at 16:00 with happy hour until 18:00, and then dinner at shortly after 18:00 before getting everything packed that can be packed ready for loading early tomorrow.

When rated out of 10, some days suck and are a resounding 1. Others are excellent and score 9 or 10. Without wanting to resort to hyperbole, I would have to rate today as a 20. I awoke this morning to the rumble of thunder and the pattering of rain on the roof of my bungalow. On looking out of the window a huge puddle surrounded the steps down from the bungalow, and my first challenge of the day was to make it to breakfast with dry feet. This mission a success, after breaking fast I returned to my room to prepare for todays adventure; a Jetski and ATV combo with Moorea Activities Centre.  Picked up from in front of the hotel at 9.10, the transfer to the activity centre took me around Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay to their waterside site. Moorea Activities Centre are good enough to take photos during their tours which are then made available, so thanks to them for the images I'm able to share. Day 9 - Saturday 13 January 224

Today is my last day in Moorea, so it's a day of preparation more than anything else. I need to be on the 08.10 ferry tomorrow morning back to Tahiti, so I have a taxi booked for 07.00 to ensure I have plenty of time; the ferry terminal is only about 20 minutes away, but the 08.10 is the last ferry that I can catch to enable me to make my 12.40 flight. Breakfast taken at 06.30 as has become my habit, but before serving myself I spotted my American co-guests at the end of the pier. I wandered down to join them, and they had caught a crab which they were feeding to the fish as sharks cruised by a bit deeper. Back for breakfast, then back to the room to obtain and add the final pieces of music to the first weekly video. The wi-fi was down due to a power cut last night, so I did what I could on the video, then gathered my mask and snorkel along with the Gopro to have a look at the reef and life I could find there. Day 5 - Tuesday 9th January 2024

Today was a moving day; it was time for me to leave Tahiti, and move onto the neighbouring island of Moorea. I had fun packing as I had additional stuff to go into my bag; the winter wear that was needed to depart the UK probably (hopefully) won't be required for the rest of the trip, but a pair of jeans and a hoodie take up more space than a pair of shorts. Still, everything went in after a couple of attempts. I can see that I'm going to have to do something a bit smarter when I get to New Zealand and Australia. Anyway, away from the hotel by taxi at 10.30, and I arrived at the ferry terminal in plenty of time for the 11.30 ferry over to Moorea. A 40 minute journey over, and as we entered the Moorea lagoon the heavens opened. We disembarked in the torrential downpour, and after I'd reclaimed my baggage and sheltered for a while, it let up a bit and I was able to get a taxi to my home for the next 5 nights; the Hotel Kaveka.
