Day 83 - Wednesday 27th March 2024
Today didn't exactly go to plan. When I was planning this trip back in October or November, I noted down a lot of places to go and visit as I made my way from place to place. I took a look at the list for today, and decided that I wanted a more flexible journey with more freedom to explore, so I threw the original plan out of the window. Well, not entirely thrown ..... everything in the list is around Bright where I'm staying tonight, so I can do that tomorrow. Instead I had a bit of an explore of things en route.
After the late night yesterday, I had a leisurely start to the day; breakfast at the golf club to start, and checked out at 10:00. I took a look at the map, and decided my first target of the day was going to be Indigo Falls. Off the main road and onto a potholed and gravel track, I watched a kangaroo bound off the road and up the hill before making my way to a parking area in a butterfly covered meadow. Up the path a short way and a small cascade greeted me. This felt a bit disappointing, but I spotted a path leading up further. I followed this until the undercut under the path felt too dangerous, but this bought me up to a point where I could see the upper fall which was much more impressive. Not up to Kiwi standards, but not at all bad!
Next target into the Satnav was Woolshed Falls. From the car park I followed the signs to a viewpoint, which looked out over a quite impressive fall. There wasn't much water going over it today, but it still looked quite impressive. It must be absolutely awesome when in full flow.Back to the car park, and I next followed a sign to the Granite Water Race ..... the falls are part of Reedy Creek, which I know due to the vlog I watch by a gold prospector; this area is rich in alluvial gold deposits. The miners back in the day had cut a channel through the granite to help with their gold mining .... I didn't photograph this as it's man made, and I much prefer the natural.Next was a visit to the Murmungee Lookout. A left turn off the main road took me onto 2km of gravel tracks. This car isn't as suited to the gravel as the Rav4 was in New Zealand, but I made my way up to the lookout. It was a shame that today was so hazy as the view could have been so much better. In any case, it was worth the trip up there to see the view.
By now it was after midday, and I had two things on my mind. The first was trying to get someone to take a look at my lost filling; as I have two nights in Bright I thought that this may be an opportunity. A stop off in Myrtleford for a coffee, and then back onto the road for the short journey to Bright. I parked up, and found the dentist at 13:30, only for them to be shut until 14:00, so I returned then. With the Easter weekend looming they are fully booked today and tomorrow, but they've taken my details in case they get a cancellation.
